CeBER Seminar 2016 #10
Date: 27th May 2016
Guest Speaker: Dr Sarah Jones
Interest in cultivation of various algae species continues to grow due to the wide range of possible products. Dr Sarah Jones, a post-doctoral research fellow in CeBER, shared different aspects of her PhD journey with us in this seminar. In addition to giving insights on the emotional involvement of doing a PhD, Dr Jones shared the results of her analysis of energy use in different types of algal photobioreactors. Dr Jones compared the energy use and algal growth in the widely-used airlift reactor to two novel photobioreactors: the oscillating reactor and the wave reactor. She illustrated the need to optimise reactor operating conditions in order to minimise energy consumption while still maintaining the maximum biomass productivity. Dr Jones also talked about the work she is continuing to do in her post-doc to develop energy efficient photobioreactors and help realise the full potential of algae.
