LFCR characterisation showing the dye clearing over time

Facilities for product recovery and purification include a high-speed centrifuge, various microbial cell disruption systems (including ultrasonication, hydrodynamic cavitation and rapid pressure release through the French press and high-pressure homogeniser), preparative chromatography (packed and expanded bed), solvent extraction systems and standard laboratory approaches.  The Centre has access to a range of equipment for transport and mixing related studies, including an electrical resistance tomography system, developed within the department, and conductivity analysis of flow in packed beds.  In addition, students have access to the positron emission tomography facilities at Ithemba labs and X-ray tomography facilities at the University of Stellenbosch.
