Welcome to the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Bioprocess Engineering Research.
CeBER is one of five research units that comprise the Department of Chemical Engineering on UCT’s historic Upper campus. We are positioned at the base of one of the seven natural wonders of the world, Table Mountain, and are surrounded by the diversity of suburb, city and township. This is the location where we aim to rise up the nation’s global leaders in bioprocess engineering and forge the way forward in sustainable processes.
CeBER strives to equip scientists at the postgraduate level with expertise that will allow them to excel in every sector of the bioprocess arena, from research to industry. Our goal is to provide for and transform South Africa with an advancing knowledge of bioprocess engineering that is relevant and excellent, through contract research and a multi-disciplinary approach to its transfer and application.
CeBER is home to five academic staff members; approximately four to eight postdoctoral fellows at any given time; and close to 45 postgraduate students. The Centre maintains a diversity of disciplines across its researchers and collaborators to nurture a cross-disciplinary approach to research.
